Parent & Baby Yoga Classes

Caversham, Reading & online

What is parent and baby yoga?

The class I run combines yoga for the parent (stretching and strength) with songs and mini moves for the baby to keep them entertained and encourage bonding. I move backwards and forwards between yoga for the mums and yoga for the babies so they're not left on the side. My eldest would just cry in that situation and I found it stressful as a new mum, so the babies are very much integrated into the class.

When is the best time to start postnatal yoga?

I recommend 7 weeks postnatal and once you have been signed off by your GP. It may be 10-12 weeks after a caesarean birth. Some people start later, when they are feeling ready to be out and about. You are welcome to attend until your baby is crawling confidently.

If you come 7-12 weeks, be aware that you are likely to spend time feeding or changing your baby. And that's fine! As the weeks continue, you will get to do more and more of the yoga yourself. It's also ok if they cry and you need to walk round with them. It's a very friendly class.

One mum recently said, "I felt really nervous about coming to class and finally felt ready when he was 7 months. Now I feel silly because it was great and everyone was so friendly." It's not silly at all; it's a big deal to get out the house with a newborn.

Is baby yoga safe?

Yes. We use simple, gentle movements that support the babies' developmental stages. Simple baby massage techniques also help with their digestion and touch is important for bonding and feeling safe in the world. They enjoy the familiar songs and kissing games!

Do I have to be physically flexible to join in?

No! Often, postnatally there can be also sorts of aches and pains, including backache, sore wrists and knees, and tense shoulders. There might also be tenderness from a caesarean or tearing. We start gently and build up. I ask you to complete a registration form on booking to make sure I can look after you well.

I've been teaching Mother & Baby Yoga for 9 years and love these classes because of the community that develops.
